Canon DIGI SUPER 62 SDTV Field Lens

The DIGI SUPER 62 is a new NAB2005 introduction - intended to strongly augment choices for long focal length standard definition lenses offered by Canon.

The DIGI SUPER 62 is offered in two varieties - a wide-angle PJ62x 9BIE-D and a companion long-telephoto PJ62x 13.5BIE-D. This duality will greatly extend the options available to broadcasters and producers to service a broad range of long focal length applications in the field, in large studios, and in special venues.

These lenses embody the latest in optical technologies to implement more cost-effective high-performance long zoom SDTV lenses. They are intended for mobile truck operators and broadcasters having as their foremost priority the extended telephoto flexibility for NTSC and digital standard definition sports and entertainment event coverage. They can equally service the special needs of government (homeland security) and many institutional sectors of the market that might have long telephoto as a special priority.

ABOUT THIS LENS

The DIGI SUPER 62 design applied state of the art optical technologies to produce highly contemporary SDTV lenses. Canon's renowned engineering design optimization strategies were applied to the unique technological challenges of providing maximum image quality while implementing a wide control of focal length. The design paid particular attention to streamlining the ergonomics and physics of such a challenging optical system.

The optimizations within the optical design successfully maintain a high MTF profile over the entire image plane when exercising the 62:1 focal length change. A parallel optimization paid close attention to minimizing chromatic aberrations over this same focal range. Recognizing the especially challenging nature of sports and event coverage (that regularly encounter challenging low scene lighting) the lens designers also gave a special priority to achievement of an impressive maximum relative aperture of f 1.7.

Contrast was extended by superb control of black reproduction - with optical and mechanical design innovations that substantially reduced flare, veiling glare, and internal reflections. Similar attention to minimization of ghost images and other highlight-related chromatic distortions caused by strong light sources on-axis and off-axis further extend the operational contrast range of the lens. The resulting superb contrast range of the lens augments its high picture sharpness. The combination ensures stunning picture clarity for sports, large entertainment events, and high-resolution surveillance imagery.
